In 1738 - after the Medici family died out - Tuscany became a secundogeniture of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, i.e. this duchy was always transferred to one of the emperor's younger sons. The country was annexed to Sardinia-Piedmont in 1860. The flag shows the colors of the Austrian coat of arms, red-white-red, and in the middle (slightly shifted towards the mast) the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy.
