Modena, duchy since 1452, was ceded to the Habsburgs in 1801, which was confirmed by the Congress of Vienna in 1814/15. The last duke was deposed in 1859 and the country was attached to Sardinia-Piedmont. The flag has been handed down in two versions, with and without a coat of arms. The version with the coat of arms was probably the state flag. Its use was then reserved for offices and authorities.
