Product information "France, Merchant flag, 17th century bis 1790, size: 150 x 90 cm"

This was the Merchant flag of France in the time of the 17th century to 1790. This flag was used by private individuals on royal orders at sea. From 1661 onwards, private individuals were allowed to use a blue flag with a white cross as merchant flag, if they were traveling on royal orders. This merchant flag also had to show the crowned lily shield of France (designed as a grater coat of arms) in the middle. This shape is until today the basis of some other flags, such as Martinique and Quebec.
