The flag of Aquitaine (Guyenne) is flag, that shows the image of the coat of arms of the Duchy of Aquitaine as it has been used since the 12th century. It is of English origin. When the Duchy of Guyenne was created in 1259 - Aquitaine had been lost to the English crown - the coat of arms of Aquitaine was retained there. The Romans gave the country the name "Aquitania". Over the centuries this term was changed in Occitan or Basque, so that it became "Guiana" or "Guienne". That means: Guyenne and Aquitaine mean one and the same thing. The flag has regional significance to this day.
