After the capitulaition of Italy, Mussolini proclaimed the "Italian Social Republic" in September 1943 in the city of Salò, in the north of the country which was occupied by German troops. This state also used the Italian tricolor as its flag, but on the naval and war ensign it was supplemented by the depiction of a black eagle holding a bundle of golden lictors in its clutches. With the assassination of Mussolini by communist partisans (28.04.1945) this state ended.
