After the Kingdom of Italy had been proclaimed on 18th of March in 1861, the green-white-red tricolor supplemented in the middle by the coat of arms of Svoyen was adopted as the national flag. On 12th of June in 1946 a referendum was held for the abolition of the monarchy, so that the Savoy coat of arms was removed from the flag of the now Italian Republic on 19th of June in 1946.
