The first Portuguese flags showed only a blue cross on a white background. From 1185, the blue shield with the five white dots appeared on white bunting as a Portuguese flag, also with five shields, arranged in the shape of a cross. The blue shields (quinas) commemorate the victory of Alfonso Henry over five Moorish kings at Ourique (1139). The five white discs on the shields point out to the wounds of Christ.
