After the French troops marched in under Napoléon, Switzerland became the "Helvetic Republic" (Italian: Repubblica Elvetica), a French protectorate. On February 13th in 1799 a three-colored flag was adopted. It showed three horizontal stripes in green, red and gold. In the middle of the red stripe was placed the name of the country in large, golden letters, in German or French or Italian, depending on in which canton it was hoisted and which language was the predominant one there. In 1803 they returned to the usual flag.
