This was the naval and war flag adopted for the German Confederation as a result of the 1848 revolution. The results of the revolution were gradually reversed from 1850 onwards. The flags were also confiscated. The naval flags of the fleet were saved by Otto von Bismarck and brought to the federal fortress in Mainz.
