The house colors of the Wettins were actually blue and gold. However, the livery colors have always been black and gold. They are derived from the black and gold striped coat of arms of the Duchy of Saxony. However, national or state colors were not yet, these appeared first at the beginning of the 19th century. When the Saxon King Friedrich-August I. (from the Albertine line) returned from captivity in 1815, he was welcomed by his people with white and green garlands. In recognition of this fact, the monarch decided to use these colors in future as the state colors of Saxony, and the duchies in Thuringia (line of the Ernestines) took over almost all of this regulation.
