The colors of Saxony have always been black and gold. They are derived from the black and gold striped coat of arms of the Duchy of Saxony. The duchy was in the hands of the Ascanians from 1180, was divided into the lines of Saxony-Wittenberg and Saxony-Lauenburg in 1365, and came to the House of Wettin in 1423, from 1806 the kings of Saxony.
