Between 1714 and 1837 Hanover was linked to the United Kingdom in a personal union. This meant that the electors were also kings of Great Britain. In 1810 Hanover was incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia and revived as a kingdom in 1814. This flag was officially the merchant flag, replacing the previous sea flag. By adopting the Red Ensign with the British Union Jack in the upper corner of the flag, Hanover gained great advantages in trading with the entire British Empire.
