The German Revolution of 1848 gave a tremendous boost to the independence movement of the Germans in Schleswig and Holstein. However, the black, red and golden German flag and also the flag of Schleswig and Holstein in the colors blue, white and red did not meet with international recognition, especially at sea, and so from 1848 a flag was used at sea, that almost resembles tot he flag of the dukes of Gottorf, except that it did not have a swallowtail and often did not wear a crown.
