This flag was mentioned for the first time in 1604 and showed 16 horizontal stripes, four times the sequence of the colors red, blue, white and yellow, and in the middle of the flag a red armored, golden lion, and in the right paw of it is the imperial orb (Dignity of the Archidapifer). Contrary to the rules, the lion looks away from the flagpole. The sequence of the stripes varied over and over again. White and blue are the colors of the the Bavarian Wittelsbacher dynasty who ruled the country since 1776. At that time, red and yellow were referred to as the "Palatinate colors", which go back to the dignity of the Archidapifer conferred on the elector in 1544, the symbol of that was the golden orb in a red field, a symbol that at that time was on a par with the Palatinate coat of arms with the lion.
