The Order of St. Lazarus is first mentioned in 1023. Initially committed to nursing, in the middle of the 12th century he transformed himself into a military order of chivalry to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land. The Order is now based in Malta and is worldwide active in nursing and emergency aid. The flag shows (like the coat of arms) the symbol of the order on white, although the color of the coats of the knights is black.
