The nonsocialist flag of Belarus was already in use between 1917 and 1919. Belarus then belonged to the Soviet Union. After gaining independence, the flag was reintroduced in 1991, but only used until 1995. The colors come from the old coats of arms of the country, which shows a silvery horseman on red background.
