The flag of Gascony is a, that shows the image of the coat of arms of the county of Gascony from the 17th century. It was created in 1696 by the French King Louis XIV. in order to add the Gascony to his personal, large coat of arms in a heraldic way. Gascony never had its own coat of arms. Nearly nothing is known about the meaning of the heraldry created by King Louis XIV. The lion is said to be reminiscent to the County of Armagnac, but the colors do not match, and the four-part division of the coat of arms is supposed to indicate that it is a border province. The flag has regional significance to this day.
