The flag of Normandy is a flag, that shows the image of the coat of arms of the Duchy of Normandy as it has been used since 1194. When Richard I. (the Lionheart) became Duke of Normandy and King of England in 1189, his coat of arms, with the three golden leopards on red, was transferred to Normandy. From 1194, however, the coat of arms with the three leopards was also adopted as the coat of arms of the English royalty, and Normandy therefore had to cede one of the three leopards. Later (from 1450) the duchy was only a title, but the flag has regional significance to this day.
