- Order number: pf552
The Order of Calatrava was founded in 1158 by Abbot Raymond Serrat as a spiritual order. From the spiritual order, a knightly order of the same name was formed a short time later, which was committed to the fight against the Arabs who invaded the Iberian Peninsula, and was loyal to the king of Castile. Around 1490, the Order was transferred from the Pope to the kings of Spain, and as a result, the Order was transformed into a Royal Order of Merit. In 1838, the Order was secularized. The flag shows the symbol of the Order on white, the color of the coats of the knights.
