The district of Hanover existed between 1885 and 2001. In the years 1932 and 1974, the district area was expanded considerably by regional reforms, until it was abolished on 1st of November in 2001 by a regional reform. The coat of arms in the flag was created in 1974. The previously coat of arms had been introduced in 1935.
