Normally only a red and white bicolor was used in the Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt until 1839. From 1839 this flag with a coat of arms existed, it was used as the official flag (state flag) until 1903. Its use was normally reserved for offices and authorities. However, it could also be used by private individuals between 1839 and 1867.
