The Order of Alcántara was founded in 1156. His task was originally to protect the city of Ciudad Rodrigo in the south of León, and later also the whole area of Extremadura, from the Arabs. In 1492, the Order was transferred from the Pope to the Kings of Spain, and as a result, the Order was transformed into a Royal Order of Merit. The flag shows the symbol of the Order on white, the color of the coats of the knights.
