In 1749 this merchant flag (civil ensign) was introduced for Austria. It showed narrow black stripes on a golden background and the double-headed eagle in the upper corner. Its appearance is said to have been adapted to the flag of Tuscany, which was then also ruled by the Habsburgs, in order to come under the protection of an agreement with pirate barbarians.
