The Margrave of Meissen from the House of Wettin became Elector of Saxony in 1547. In 1806 the Electorate of Saxony was elevated to a kingdom. The son of the last King of Saxony, Prince Friedrich Christian (1893-1968) revived the title of the Margrave of Meissen to mark his position as head of the House of Wettin (Albertiner). The colors of the Margraviate of Meissen were black and gold. This flag shows the image of the coat of arms. So called escutcheon flags were common practice in the pre-Napoleonic era.
